THE IDEA
A demand of the simple, but somewhat challenging task of measurement and the assembly of external stairs, in accordance with the BCA, became apparent whilst working as a builder in the housing industry. Availability of quality stair makers and assemblers was rare in the Gippsland region. There was an opportunity and need required by the building industry for the ease of ordering, manufacturing and delivery of stairs, compliant with building regulations.
IN MOTION
In 1996, Prefab Stairs began with Glenn McLean producing external timber stairs in his garage to supplement income. A few hardware stores were approached in the Gippsland area and the demand for an easy external stair product became very apparent. Working 18 hours a day and most weekends to keep up with new orders, the idea of making stairs grew into a family business.
Over the past 15 years a local 'backyard' interest has become a successful business requiring relocation several times to larger premises due to the demand and interest from trade outlets, building industry trades people and 'D.I.Y' home owners.
Although still a family business, we now employ several local residents, both full time and part time, participate in school work experience and rehabilitation programs and are a national provider for pre-fabricated stairs.

What Our Customers Are Saying
"Being a builder for 30 years and always building stairs myself , I found them to be very labour intensive. After a bit of research and some emails I ordered two sets of stairs through my local hardware shop. For me to build these stairs would have taken well over a day and a bit of head scratching. But with Prefab I received them in 5 days and had them built within 20 minutes . I couldn’t be happier with the product and the ease at which they went together . The job was on the coast and I was a bit worried about corrosion, this wasn’t an issue because I went and looked at some that have been in place for over 10 years, they still look great. From now on I won’t be building stairs myself and have told everyone I know how good the product is. Well done boys." - Adam Sadler, Builder
"Running my business in a commercial warehouse with a mezzanine level in North Rocks, Sydney, we only had access to the mezzanine via a dodgy steel attic ladder. After some research at my local Mitre 10 store and some expert advice we purchased a 16 tread stair from Prefab stairs in kit form. We had minimal trouble assembling and erecting the stair and are much happier ,safer and easier moving things up and down the stairs to our new office area. The team at Prefab stairs were great to deal with and very willing to give advice. Shipping from Melbourne to Sydney was only 3 days and the cost saving compared to stairs locally in Sydney. Great product Guys – Excellent Service." - Nick Jovicic – REPAIR ME - Sydney
"Built a deck for my summer project and wanted an easy option for stair access. I found Prefab stairs at my local Mitre 10 store and purchased a three step Merbau stair. Great quality timber, easy to install and looks great. Heaps cheaper than other stairs at different hardware shops. Couldn’t be happier , and I didn’t need to get any trades in to build it." - Barry Beasley Sydney
